Why do medicines make us feel even more sick?
Prynka,
We have grown up in a world where every discomfort or pain is resolved with pills. While the medical field has expanded with new technologies and more doctors are now taking the initiative to expand their skills to alternative or preventative medicine, big pharmaceutical companies remain fixated on making profits and healthcare professionals’ close-minded therapeutic approaches have caused the normal population to lose trust in this sacred profession that is solely based on saving lives.
A medical visit to a doctor is no longer about building a doctor-patient rapport but rather a 10-minute conversation about the patient’s symptoms and the possible treatment options to be given to alleviate these symptoms. Although there are many facets to be blamed for creating such horrible experiences for these patients today, we will focus on why medicines are making us feel weaker and sick. Let us talk about a common chronic illness like diabetes. Diabetes is caused when your body is not able to process insulin properly hence elevating your glucose levels. An immediate treatment option is to provide metformin to the patient and request the patient to come back after a few months to check the lab reports again. A straightforward interaction is being approached here rather than a long discussion on how possibly the patient’s body stopped processing insulin. Not consuming sugars but also lack of exercise, stress, and toxins can elevate insulin resistance. While the patient takes the medicine to decrease glucose level the underlying condition remains, later causing complications inadvertently increasing the consumption of more pills and then unknowingly joining a vicious cycle of relentless consumption of pharmaceutical drugs.
Finding the root cause of any condition is one of the most important steps to be taken to approach healthier living. Everybody has a different genetic makeup, is exposed to various environmental stressors, and is living in diverse lifestyles. A tailored treatment plan that involves diet, lifestyle, genetics, exercise, sleep, and nutrients is provided to patients to avoid unnecessary intake of medications. Women have often seen the negative side of healthcare due to the lack of research and treatment options for common conditions like PCOD, PCOS, and endometriosis. Even now teenagers showing hormonal imbalances are given birth-control pills which have been reported to increase the risk of blood clotting causing pulmonary embolism or heart attacks.
Similarly, an increased prescription of painkillers by doctors for any illness has led to the Opioid Overdose Epidemic in many countries. Big pharmaceutical companies have continued to remain profitable through their marketing strategies and obsession with power and money over people’s lives leading to such careless prescription of drugs. Prescribing medicines has now become like throwing a ball in the dark hoping it goes through the hoop.
After the lockdown during COVID, many people have felt mentally depressed and are approaching doctors and therapists to just feel normal again. While the patient takes the anti-depressants and religiously visits the therapist the underlying Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 deficiency remain and the reason for these vitamin deficiencies remains unanswered. An excessive intake of Protein Pump Inhibitors, a gastric protector can often lead to these deficiencies. The patient is unaware of these facts and continues to take these antacids disrupting the gut flora and causing inflammation and many other nutrient deficiencies.
People worldwide are confused about the right approach to treat their medical conditions. Being conscious of what you consume and prioritizing your health can place you a few steps away from unnecessary prescription drugs. Medical drugs are not the only solution to health and wellness. Adopting multiple approaches like a nutrient-rich diet, sleep, exercise, and improving our mental health will show tremendous improvements in curing any illness
